Our Values Run Deep
At K&L Gates, we embrace our core values. We believe in hiring collaborative, committed, and diverse teams; using state-of-the-art technology; offering continuous professional development training; and promoting pro bono and diversity initiatives. Most importantly, we strive to cultivate an environment that celebrates talented legal professionals. Learn more about our core values below.
Maintaining a diverse workforce is essential to a strong law firm. We’re devoted to the development of the most skilled and diverse workforce possible, and work to achieve this objective through three channels: recruitment, retention, and outreach. Thanks to these efforts, minority, women, disabled, and LGBT lawyers have become increasingly engaged at K&L Gates, taking leadership roles that include service on the Management Committee, Executive Committee, and as Practice Group Coordinators. K&L Gates is proud to have been on the "Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity” and “Top 100 Law Firms for Women” lists.
K&L Gates has an ongoing commitment to reduce our environmental footprint on a global level. The first step was becoming a participant in the ABA-EPA Law Firm Office Climate Challenge, a program that encourages law offices to take simple, practical steps to become better environmental and energy stewards. As part of this challenge, we’ve taken some major actions such as creating energy-efficient and LEED-certified workspaces, increasing recycling and decreasing waste, reducing electricity consumption by 10 percent, reducing travel through the use of video and teleconference technologies, and going paperless whenever possible through the use of online materials as well as a robust email and document management archiving system.
Our firm is committed to maintaining our forward-looking culture, and we view every decision through the prism of our younger lawyers. Intergenerational excellence is the phrase that captures our central mission to ensure younger lawyers have the benefit of their senior counterparts’ insights and experience, are committed to excellence in client service, and are united by the firm’s commitment to these common goals.
To support this mission, we constantly promote our lawyers’ professional development, working together to create a range of formal and informal development opportunities throughout our worldwide offices. Our partners share their time, wisdom, and values with other lawyers through important institutional efforts, including our mentoring program, the associate review process, and participation in our practice groups and professional development programs.
At a practical level, when a law firm's policies focus on recently minted lawyers it does not mortgage their future by mortgaging its own. We operate with a zero-debt policy, a rarity in the industry.
Pro bono and community service provide an invaluable contribution to our communities. That’s why we have a longstanding tradition of providing services through dozens of nonprofit organizations, handling hundred of pro bono matters each year, including litigating civil rights cases, establishing and advising nonprofit organizations, and representing indigent persons in consumer, landlord-tenant, family law, and immigration matters. The firm has demonstrated its commitment to pro bono by becoming a signatory to the Pro Bono Institute’s Pro Bono Challenge, pledging to perform pro bono work equal to three percent of the firm's total billable hours.
State-of-the-art technology is at the core of everything we do. Not only is it how we maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace, it’s how we enhance client service. All our offices are seamlessly linked together, providing our lawyers with a wide range of computer-based productivity tools whether they’re in the office or working remotely. And thanks to innovative web-based technologies, we’re able to improve collaboration and communication, both internally and with our clients.
We offer two types of programs to help our lawyers fulfill their roles and responsibilities outside the firm. Our Balanced Hours program, which is available to all K&L Gates lawyers, allows lawyers the ability to collaborate with firm leaders and administrators to develop pragmatic solutions, such as telecommuting, flexible hours, and variable workloads to help better balance their personal and professional needs. After all, we believe this type of balance creates more dedicated and productive lawyers.
And we’re not alone in this thinking. Our Balanced Hours program has been lauded by the legal industry as well as work/life balance expert Cynthia Thomas Calvert, co-director of the project for attorney retention (PAR) and deputy director for the program on WorkLife Law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. Calvert named K&L Gates among "the forefront of law firms that are improving the quality of life for attorneys and the quality of service to clients through flexible scheduling" and noted our commitment to addressing substantively dissatisfaction and attrition among lawyers.
For eligible lawyers departing the firm for personal or family reasons, we offer K&L Gates Connects. This program lets lawyers stay connected to the firm and the industry by allowing them to attend social and business development functions and professional development programs, as well as to receive reimbursement for one bar membership.
It’s these types of innovative programs that allow us to support our lawyers as they pursue their goals, both personally and professionally.
