Oil & Gas Insurance: Lessons Learned from the Deepwater Horizon Disaster
It has been almost 10 years since an explosion onboard the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig rocked the entire energy industry. In that time, most of the major (and minor) players involved in the disaster have been forced to resort to the courts (or arbitration) to resolve disputes with their insurers, and they have made new law along the way. This breakout session discusses the insurance lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon disaster. As part of that discussion, the panel will cover insurance topics that are relevant to every oil and gas company no matter how big or small, including insurance coverage for environmental liabilities, additional insured provisions in master service contracts, insurance for joint ventures, the relative benefits of litigation vs. arbitration, and insurer challenges to the reasonableness of underlying settlements.
