Milan - Lawyers from the Milan office of global law firm K&L Gates LLP are advising the Yacht Club of Imperia (Italy), Italian industrial design company Bertone Design Srl, and a group of other organizations in the formation of a team to challenge Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the 36th match of the America’s Cup competition taking place in Auckland in 2021. The team’s launch was announced this past weekend during the Vele d’Epoca vintage yacht challenge in Imperia.
Employing a novel approach for the international yachting competition, the team will rely on a network of companies rather than the backing of an individual magnate. The team will compete using a new ship to be designed and manufactured in Italy and named “Columbus 2021,” with some Italian universities also involved in the design and R&D aspects of the project.
Milan partners Roberto Podda and Giampaolo Salsi are leading the K&L Gates team advising on the matter, assisted by Milan partner Arturo Meglio, counsel Lorenzo Fratantoni, and Perth partner Simon Salter.
“We are thrilled to be able to assist this group in its challenge of the 2021 America’s Cup,” stated Podda. “Managed by a strong synergy of companies representing Italian excellence rather than an individual tycoon, we believe that this project constitutes a brand new approach in America’s Cup history and will benefit immensely from our firm’s global platform and perspective.”
